Sports Hall of Fame returns for 2011

Family and friends are invited to nominate Nuu-chah-nulth athletes and prominent sports supporters as this year the Tlu-piich Games will see the return of the Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2011 Sports Hall of Fame is not just for athletes.

"It's for anyone who has been involved in sports, coaches, referees, managers," said games coordinator Richard Samuel.

The callout for nominations states the committee is looking for nominees who were "well-rounded athletes in their prime" or who have provided "opportunities for Nuu-chah-nulth people to participate in sporting events." Family can nominate someone posthumously.

There have not been any new members added to the Sports Hall of Fame since the revival of the Tlu-piich Games in 2009. The last person inducted into the Hall of Fame was ball-player Boyd Gallic in 2004.

The Hall of Fame gallery, showing athletes in action and photos of other Nuu-chah-nulth sports personalities, is located in the main floor hall of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council building on Mission Road.

"The selection committee is looking for people who have made an exceptional contribution towards sports in the Nuu-chah-nulth community," said Samuel

To nominate someone, a biography of the individual, accompanied by a statement of their sports accomplishments, must be submitted to the committee. A good quality photo of the nominee is also required.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, July 29, at 4:30 p.m.
