Uchucklesaht Tribe government joins the ACRD board

Port Alberni

The Board of Directors of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) welcomed the Uchucklesaht Tribe Government as the newest member of the Regional District.

As of Feb. 1, 2014 the Regional Board has increased from 12 to 13 Directors.

Uchucklesaht Tribe Government is one of the five Maa-nulth Treaty Nations, four are located within the ACRD. Huu-ay-aht First Nations and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government joined the ACRD on April 1, 2012. Toquaht Nation may join at a later date.

The ACRD is the only Regional District in BC to have more than a single First Nation as a member.

Uchucklesaht Tribe Government has had executive council representation attending and observing the ACRD meetings for quite some time and is now a voting member of the ACRD, working to build a strong and positive relationship with their neighbors.

The ACRD representative for the Uchucklesaht Tribe Government will be Executive of Human Services Wilfred Cootes Jr.

The Uchucklesaht Tribe Government is quite confident that Mr. Cootes will represent Uchucklesaht well at these meetings.

“We welcome representation of Uchucklesaht Tribe Government at the Board. They will provide broader inclusion and expanded cooperation among the communities within the Regional District,” said Regional District Chair Cindy Solda.

The first official board meeting with all 13 directors was held today in Port Alberni. The meeting started with a welcoming ceremony. A Commissioner for taking affidavits was on hand to conduct the oaths of office for the new Treaty First Nation Director.
