Position Summary:
The Saasin House Outreach Worker plays a vital role in supporting the well-being of community
members, building relationships based on trust, respect, and active listening. In this role, the Outreach
Worker engages with a range of people, from colleagues to community members, ensuring that all
interactions are grounded in the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations’ values of mutual respect and huu-piits-
tulth (helping one another). The Outreach Worker’s ability to communicate effectively is crucial in
building these relationships, especially when working with community members who may not yet
recognize the support available to them. Active listening is central to understanding the needs of the
people, allowing the Outreach Worker to develop personalized, culturally grounded support plans. The
role also involves tasks such as responding to phone calls, emails, and sharing relevant information
through social media channels, all done in a way that reflects the community’s values and principles.

members. This role strives to nurture a sense of belonging, interconnectedness, and collective
responsibility—values that align with huu-piits-tulth (helping one another) and contribute to a healthy,
thriving community where all members are supported.
 

Duties and Responsibilities:
Home Care Support
• Maintain a compassionate, non-judgmental, and culturally sensitive approach when working with
community members, particularly those who are marginalized or at risk.
• Support individuals in accessing essential services, including temporary housing, medical care,
and legal aid, ensuring that these services are respectful of cultural practices and needs.
• Work with community members to identify, assess, and address their challenges, using traditional
knowledge and modern resources to develop flexible, holistic action plans.
• Create safe spaces and provide supported opportunities that help individuals and families improve
their quality of life, while nurturing their connection to culture and community.
• Liaise with community partners, Elders, and cultural leaders to ensure that clients are connected
to services that address their survival needs, such as food, clothing, health care, and social support, while respecting traditional knowledge and practices.
• Actively engage with community members, including those who may be struggling with
substance use or other challenges, fostering relationships built on respect and trust, and
encouraging access to supportive services when they are ready.
• Facilitate intake procedures, ensuring they are culturally appropriate and welcoming for all
clients.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers and cultural advisors to build a strong network of support
and resources that are culturally aligned and responsive to the needs of community members.
Other Responsibilities:
• Work closely with the community to ensure that services and resources are available and
accessible to all who need them, especially those from at-risk or underserved populations.
• Ensure that services are provided in a way that respects the community’s traditions and practices,
and is always mindful of the collective healing journey.
 

Qualifications:
Education, Training, and Certificates:
• High School Diploma
• Valid Driver’s License, with access to a vehicle
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field, with an understanding of
Indigenous culture, practices, and needs
 

Work Experience:
• Experience working in community outreach, social services, or similar roles
• Experience working with Indigenous, at-risk, or underserved populations, understanding their
unique cultural needs and histories
 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Attributes:
• Knowledge:
            o Strong understanding of Indigenous culture, community dynamics, and practices
            o Familiarity with Indigenous-led organizations and community-based services
• Skills and Abilities:
            o Excellent organizational, verbal communication, and time management skills
            o Ability to engage in meaningful conversations with community members, showing
               empathy, respect, and cultural sensitivity
            o Knowledge of house-keeping and community-building skills
• Attributes:
            o Upholding confidentiality, professionalism, and integrity at all times
            o Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy in sensitive situations
            o Empathy and a deep commitment to the well-being of community members
            o Trustworthiness, respect for all individuals, and a customer-oriented approach to services.
 

Additional Assets:
• Preference will be given to qualified Indigenous candidates who understand the importance of
cultural and community healing.
• Must possess a clear criminal record check for the vulnerable services sector.
• Clear driver’s abstract.
• First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one

Work Conditions:

•  May be exposed to sensitive and confidential information, requiring discretion and respect for
privacy.
• May face high-stress circumstances when working with individuals in crisis or those who are
struggling with volatile situations, requiring patience and a calm demeanor.

Physical Requirements:
• Must be in good health to perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting, carrying, and walking
throughout the day.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and remain mobile, visiting homes and other locations that
may involve stairs or rough, uneven terrain.
Travel Requirements:
• Frequent travel by car to visit community members and attend meetings or service sites.
